NEHERS is developing a new HERS rating for embodied carbon, first introduced at a NESEA conference keynote a few years ago. We have been working on reducing operational carbon in buildings, representing 39% of the carbon released into the atmosphere, wasting everyone's exploding energy dollars, and contributing to global warming. But there's more to do by reducing the amount of carbon in the extraction, processing, and transporting of building material, known as embodied carbon.
